The Golden Age

- The present day - The Traveler is discovered on Mars.[1] It imparts its vast knowledge to humanity,[2] spurring the colonization of the Solar System.[3] The Golden Age, an era of widespread prosperity and technological miracles, begins.[3] The Golden Age lasts for centuries.[4]

- Vex ruins are discovered on Venus.

- The Collapse - The Darkness, the ancient enemy of the Traveler, arrives in the Solar System, precipitating the Collapse and the abrupt end of the Golden Age. Earth's defenders are steadily beaten back until humanity is threatened with extinction. Humanity is saved only through the intervention of the Traveler,[6] which sacrifices itself to stop the Darkness.[7] With its last breath, the Traveler creates the Ghosts, to seek out those who can wield its light as a weapon.[8]
- At some point during the Collapse, some humans seeking refuge from the Darkness flee into deep space.[9]
The Dark Age
- In the aftermath of the Collapse comes the Dark Age. It is a time of vast suffering and terrible evil.[10]
- Those humans who fled into space during the Collapse return, transformed into the Awoken. Many take up residence in the Reef.[9]
- The Exo reappear, but their memories have been irreparably damaged.[10]
- Rumors circulate of a haven beneath the Traveler.[10]
The City Age

- The City is founded - Survivors of the Collapse, human, Awoken, and Exo, travel from far and wide to the site of the inactive Traveler, and build a City beneath its protective aura.[11][12] The Titans construct and defend the City's walls.[13] The City Age begins.[14]

- The Faction Wars - The City becomes embroiled in the Faction Wars, forcing the Guardians to step in and end the bloodshed. The City's new government is created under the Consensus.
- The Great Ahamkara Hunt - The Vanguard deems the Ahamkara to be too dangerous and orders their destruction in the Great Ahamkara Hunt.
- The Battle of Twilight Gap - Sometime after the City has been established, the Forces of the City fight a fierce battle outside its walls in the valley of Twilight Gap against an onslaught of the armies of the Darkness.[15]
- The Great Disaster - After encountering the Hive, the City attempted to retake the moon in a full-scale assault, only to take massive losses and be forced to retreat. The moon has become a forbidden zone ever since.
- The once noble hero Dredgen Yor begins his campaign of destruction, murdering fellow Guardians and civilians alike.

- The events of Destiny - Seven centuries from the present day,[6] a Ghost revives a long-dead Guardian outside the Cosmodrome in Old Russia. The Speaker tasks this Guardian with finding the means to restore the Traveler before the Darkness returns and destroys the City once and for all.[16]
