"In the heat of battle, Guardian, you will know the right choice to make."
— Lord Shaxx

The Mountaintop is a Legendary Kinetic Grenade Launcher acquired from the Crucible pinnacle quest of the same name given in Season of the Forge. It is the second Breech grenade launcher in the game after The Militia's Birthright, and has effectively zero range drop-off with shells experiencing virtually entirely linear travel, technically making it the most accurate grenade launcher in the game.

During the Into the Light update, a BRAVE Arsenal version of the weapon was introduced with a new appearance, different perks, and a new origin trait. It is available as loot from the Onslaught activity and can be attuned at the Hall of Champions to drastically increase its drop rate. A more unique version of this weapon is also available on rare drops with double perks and its own unique Weapon Ornament.

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."

[Fireteam leaders: Do not advance on the Wall. Fall back to the Ridgeback District.]

Shaxx freezes with a Vandal's windpipe in his fist. He waits for Saladin to justify the strategy.

[I repeat: All teams rally at the Ridgeback District. Do NOT advance. The City is lost.]

Shaxx drops the Vandal, then empties the rest of his clip into a Captain. He and his fireteam are running on fumes. The dead, Fallen and Guardian alike, litter the Twilight Gap.

[Shaxx! Do you copy?]

He risks a look over his shoulder at their home, the place they call the Last Safe City. Not burning. Not yet. Gritting his teeth, he reloads.

[Shaxx, your orders are to retreat.]

He sees a gap in the onslaught of invaders and gestures to the others. "Nkechi! Take Abdi and Truce. Liu Feng, with me! Bray! Cover us!"

[This battlefield is not your stage, Shaxx! This is not about glory!]

His fireteam doesn't hesitate.

[Shaxx! For the final time: Fall! Back!]

As the six of them crest the Wall, Shaxx cuts the feed.

Empress Caiatl strolled between rows of Legionaries standing at attention.

"I commend you, Valus Saladin." The empress projected her voice for the benefit of the soldiers. "Your training has made the Iron War Beasts the very tusks of the empire."

Caiatl returned to the head of the formation and gave a nod. Saladin's gravelly voice boomed. "Armor and weapons will be stripped and stowed. Hand-to-hand training begins in two cycles. Fall out."

Once the soldiers had dispersed, the empress's tone softened. "Your soldiers are exemplary. Yet you seem… unsatisfied."

"Many years ago," Saladin replied, "at Twilight Gap, I gave an order that was disobeyed."

"A rash attack?" The empress inquired.

Saladin shook his head. "The opposite. A retreat."

"In retrospect, it was a mistake," he continued. "If not for my soldiers' insubordination, we would have lost."

"I drilled the Iron War Beasts on Darkness-based tactics from the Hive to Clovis Bray and back again," Saladin concluded. "I just hope that when their time comes, they have the strength of conviction to defy the Light with equal ferocity."

Trivia[edit]

  • The Mountaintop saw extensive usage in PvE commonly coupled with The Recluse, the duo becoming one of the most popular combinations for endgame activities. Rather ironically, both weapons were originally only obtainable through the Crucible.
  • Because of the popularity of the Mountaintop and the ease of usage of the Micro-Missile perk, the perk was integrated into the frame of the weapon itself and became a new intrinsic frame for its BRAVE Arsenal iteration.
