"It came from the Emperor Himself."
Primus Ta'aun[1]

The Emperor is the former title given to the ruler of the Cabal Empire.[2] Dominus Calus was the last Cabal leader to claim the title. When Dominus Ghaul overthrew Calus, Ghaul refused to call himself Emperor, insisting that there would be no more Emperors. Nonetheless, a number of Cabal continued to refer to Ghaul as "the Emperor" out of respect. In his exile, Calus continued to use the title and considered himself the last Cabal Emperor and the last true Cabal.[3]

History

Following the arrival of Oryx, the Taken King into the Solar System, Primus Ta'aun of the Skyburners legion sent a report to the Cabal High Command detailing the destruction of Fleetbase Korus. This report reached Ghaul, who gave Ta'aun explicit orders to board the Dreadnaught and eliminate Oryx.[1] Following the taking of Ta'aun and the deaths of Valus Mau'ual and Valus Tlu'urn, Cabal forces on the Dreadnaught sent a detailed distress signal to Ghaul. While a Guardian managed to stop the signal,[4] Dead Orbit had evidence that the signal had reached its intended target.[5] This was confirmed two years later, when Ghaul led his Red Legion in an invasion of the Last City, instigating the Red War.[6]

Trivia

The office of Emperor may be the subject of worship for the Cabal soldiers, based on Ta'aun's words and the Cabal's overall fanaticism for victory or death, given that all Cabal who are deployed are exiled from the Empire until they succeed in their task. This can be a homage to the the Imperial Cult of the Warhammer 40000 mythos.
