As the Guardian headed to Mercury, Zavala admitted that he was responsible for the schism between the Vanguard and the Sunbreakers, and warned them that they hated Zavala. Tracing the Sunbreakers to [[The Burning Shrine]], the Guardian impressed Ouros and was granted the power to utilize the [[Hammer of Sol]], along with any other Guardian who proved worthy. The Guardian returned to Zavala, who lamented the exile of the Sunbreakers and reflected on the mistakes of his youth. He was glad that their fire had now returned to the City and would once again keep it safe, strong, and warm.<ref name="Bound by Fire"/>

Zavala spoke to the Young Wolf before they departed the Tower, which surprised the Commander, as he had assumed they would have already left on their unsanctioned mission. He admitted that he knew better than trying to convince them not to go, as that would only insult them both, but he reminded them that the escapees from the Prison of Elders were running rampant across the system and the Vanguard was stretched too thin to stop them all. As such, the Young Wolf would have no support from the Vanguard if they did choose to wage a war in the Reef seeking vengeance.<ref name="LC"/>

In the [[Tangled Shore]], the Young Wolf forged an uneasy alliance with the Fallen mob boss, [[The Spider]], to aid them in hunting down Uldren and his Scorn Barons. One by one, the Guardian succeeded in striking down the Scorn Barons and ruining their unscrupulous plans. At the mysterious Awoken [[The Watchtower|Watchtower]], the Young Wolf and Petra finally managed to confront Uldren, who was weakened and at their mercy after being mauled by the [[Voice of Riven]]. The two completed their mission to avenge Cayde-6 and recovered the Ace of Spades from the traitor Prince's corpse. Upon the Young Wolf's return to the Tower, Zavala sternly stated that while he did not shed a tear for Uldren's death and would have ended him personally in another lifetime, he believed that the Guardian risked much in storming the Reef on their own accord. Fearing for Osiris's life due to his new-found mortality, Ikora sends the Guardian to assist him. Both the Guardian and Osiris board a Shadow Legion carrier and use drop pods to drop down to Neptune when they arrive within the planet's orbit. Upon landing on Neptune, they discover [[Neomuna]], an advanced Human city built by members of the ''[[Exodus Indigo]]'' after the Collapse and powered by the Veil. The Guardian alongside the [[Cloud Strider]]s, [[Rohan]], and [[Nimbus]], as well as Caiatl and her Imperial Cabal, prevent the Shadow Legion from retrieving the Veil. They would prevent the Shadow Legion from retrieving the Veil numerous times, with Rohan courageously sacrificing his life to destroy the Radial mast. Ultimately the Guardian succeeds in stopping Calus, slaying the former Cabal Emperor within the Veil Containment room. However, this victory would be revealed to be their most monumental defeat, as the Witness would possess the Guardian's Ghost and use it to create a link between the Traveler and the Veil. Zavala and his companions would then open the barrier to observe the Witness as it created a triangular incision on the surface of the Traveler, before creating a portal on said incision. The Witness would then enter the portal alongside its Pyramids to begin preparations for the Final Shape. Returning to the tower, Zavala would later speak with the Guardian upon their return. He would tell them that the Traveler was now gone, with many Ghosts being unable to feel its presence. Zavala questioned whether he should feel thankful for its sacrifice, relieved that it could no longer bless any more of their foes with the power of the Light, or lost without which he could place his trust in. Sighing with misery, Zavala reveals to the Guardian that the amount of lives that have been lost during this conflict was what consumed him with despair. However, he would recognize that these losses have also sharpened them, granting them with Insight, and aided them in forming alliances with the Awoken, Eliksni, and even the Cabal. Finally, Zavala would disclose that when he first arrived at the Last City, he looked up to the heavens for the hope that the Traveler had granted them.

Shortly after the Witness entered into the Pale Heart, many civilians would be captured by the Shadow Legion and detained within their [[Shadow Legion Prison|prisons]]. Following a distress signal from Amanda Holliday, the Guardian with the assistance of their allies would infiltrate one of the Shadow Legion's prisons, freeing the prisoners from within and rescuing Amanda in the process. They would continue their operations by rescuing further prisoners, using the Ascendant Plane to infiltrate the prisons from within. Upon discovering a secret prison within the EDZ, the Guardian, Mithrax, and Amanda penetrate the prison. Shortly after slaying [[Vereziia, Reverent of the Witness]], Mithrax uses his gift as a Splicer to free the prisoners and assist them in escaping. Tragically, Amanda would be killed in the prison's facility explosion after sacrificing her life to allow their escape.  

===Operation Ahamkara===

Although Mara would confirm that Crow had succeeded in entering the Pale Heart, Zavala and his allies were unsuccessful in establishing contact with him. Furthermore, the Witness would begin to enact the Final Shape by utilizing the Traveler's Light, first beginning at Earth. Although the Traveler would undo the Witness's work, Mara would sense that it was ultimately approaching its victory. With few options left, Zavala initiates [[Operation Ahamkara]] alongside Ikora Rey and the Guardian to enter the portal into the Pale Heart. Despite Mara's warnings of the portal's instability, Zavala would walk to the elevator alongside Ikora and proclaim that he would not lose another soldier in their War against the Witness. While Mara would use her power to keep the portal open, Zavala would fly into the portal alongside Ikora.  With Ikora recognizing that this adventure might be their final journey, Zavala looks down at the piece of Amanda's scarf on his shoulder plate and advises her that it was an honor to serve alongside her as a leader of the Last City.

Regardless of the portal's instability, Zavala successfully crosses the [[The Threshold|Threshold]] and enters into the Pale Heart of the Traveler. However he find himself separated from Ikora, and the Guardian in the process. Eventually, Zavala enters into a cave created by the Witness where it creates dioramas representing his doubts, the Traveler's silence, and the night Hakim died. The Witness would proclaim that the Traveler had betrayed him and would offer him an eternity in the Final Shape with his family.<ref>'''Bungie (2024/6/11)''', ''[[Destiny 2]]: [[The Final Shape]], [[Promised Reunion Mark]]''</ref> Despite the upmost desire to be with his family again, Zavala refuses the Witness's offer. Outside of this cave, Zavala discovers the [[The Seclusion|Seclusion]], a location that was manifested from the memories of his family home during the Dark Age.

Later, when the Guardian received new powers from the Traveler itself at the [[The Impasse|Impasse]], Cayde would plan to create a line of communication with it. At their new camp in the Impasse, Crow would discuss the Guardian's new powers with both Zavala himself and Ikora. Zavala would respond by stating that the Traveler's weapons were useless without a plan on how to utilize them. On the other hand, Ikora would remind Zavala that the Traveler was assisting them, demonstrated by its resurrection of Cayde. The Vanguard Commander would declare the Traveler's assistance was insufficient before revealing that a Veiled Statue  reached out to him at his homestead. When Ikora would tell him that this voice was not Safiyah, Zavala would acknowledge this fact as he would hypothesize that the statues contained prisoners of the Witness. Dubious of this revelation, Ikora would declare to Zavala that this was a deception by the Witness who was utilizing his grief. Angered by this response, Zavala would tell the Warlock Vanguard that the only thing she understood about grief and desperation was how to turn it off. Interrupting their altercation, Crow would reveal to Zavala about Cayde's plan to commune with the Traveler. Despite being doubtful of this method, Zavala would allow them to go through with this plan. Due to his disillusionment with the Traveler, Zavala would decide to leave the camp alone with  the intention of discovering a way to destroy the Witness by giving himself to Darkness. Before departing, he would tell Targe that he was going for a walk and would order his Ghost to ensure their fireteam's safety. Following the whispers of the dissenting voices within the Witness, Zavala eventually finds himself at a pool of Darkness serving as the entrance into a shrine, where he hears the voice of a dissenter pleading for help. However, Zavala is then slowly approached by Ikora, Cayde, and Targe who plead for him to not enter the shrine. Despite the presence of his friends, Zavala enters into the pool of Darkness, resulting in Ikora screaming his name. Upon entering, Zavala finds himself within a dark room where he hears the voice of the Witness as it shows him a vision of the Precursors civilization. The Witness would proclaim that the Traveler also failed to provide the Precursors with a purpose within this universe just like it had done with the people of humanity. Meanwhile, Zavala would be approached by a Precursor as a dissenter would refute the Witness's fabrication, revealing that they had chosen to run from the Traveler's answer. The vision would then change as the Witness would show the Titan Vanguard the Precursors discovery of the Veil, the Traveler's abandonment of their world, and finally how they used the power of the Darkness to create the Witness. As the Precursors would begin to collapse onto the ground, a dissenter would whisper to Zavala that "what was made can be unmade" and orders him to travel towards the ritual site where the Witness was created. Emerging from a cloud of smoke, the Witness would then offer Zavala an opportunity to join its cause, however they would be interrupted by Targe, who would proclaim to the Witness that it is afraid. Snatching Targe in its hand as Zavala cried out in concern for his Ghost's safety, the Witness would declare that it had culled away fear altogether. However, Targe would remain persistent, resulting in the Witness crushing him for his defiance, sending out an outburst of Light in the process that propels Zavala away and allows his fireteam to pull him out of the pool of Darkness.<ref>'''Bungie (2024/6/4)''', ''[[Destiny 2]]: [[The Final Shape]] - [[Dissent]]''</ref>

With his newfound mortality, Zavala would be left devastated at the death of Targe, blaming himself for his Ghost's death. His fireteam would confront him, reminding him that it was Targe's decision to sacrifice his own life to save his in return. Although he would originally believe that he had given up his Light for nothing, Zavala and his allies would remember that the dissenter's had revealed that the Witness could be unmade at the memory of the ritual site where it was created. Reclaiming his hope, Zavala would reveal to his friends that he could guide them to the ritual site with their assistance. Travelling towards the location, Zavala alongside Ikora, Cayde, and Crow would fight through Hive forces while the Guardian would be tasked with infiltrating the ritual site. Furthermore, Zavala and his allies are greeted by Mara as she had arrived within the Pale Heart alongside the rest of the Coalition. Reaching the top of the ritual site, the Guardian gives themselves to Darkness to destroy the statues containing the Precursors within the Witness's consciousness. Eventually Zavala alongside his allies arrive at the top of the ritual site as the Guardian and their Ghost are forced to retreat after being cut out of the Witness's collective. Meanwhile as Zavala and his comrades killed the remainder enemy forces, the Witness manifests itself as it proclaims that it had hoped they would understand, but they had chosen entropy. With the Witness using it’s power to hold the H.E.L.M. in place, Zavala and his fireteam would retreat as the Witness would ruthlessly chase them. Although Zavala would be wounded after being struck by a piece of wall propelled by him by the Witness, he would be assisted to the entrance by Ikora as him and his allies would be transmatted onto the H.E.L.M., evading the Witness's wrath.<ref>'''Bungie (2024/6/4)''', ''[[Destiny 2]]: [[The Final Shape]] - [[Dissent]]''</ref>

Zavala began knitting a sweater following a pattern he had forgotten. He used a color that wasn't his favourite, but knew Ikora would like it. He started to second guess his work, wondering if he was making it right. Disturbing his thoughts, he received an alert about the ongoing situation on Nessus. He contacted Ikora, and she reassured him that Saint-14 and Failsafe were handling the situation. During the first [[Solstice]] after the defeat of the Witness, Sloane met with Zavala in Rehnpeir's ramen shop. When he entered, he was caught off guard by the bright lights, and muffled noises. Sloane startled him as she arrived, and led him to a table. Zavala asked where Síocháin was, and she told him she was catching up with [[Glint]]. Sloane places her order without looking at the menu she had re-memorized while Zavala struggled to find his usual. While sipping tea, Sloane questioned if Zavala was alright, but he evaded her question. She then asked if using Stasis was an adjustment for him, and he shared that his opinions on the Darkness have been changing. Sloane shared her trust that he could handle the change, as their bowls arrived. She asked how the rest of the Vanguard was, and Zavala told her that they never expected to make it this far, and now they are adapting to a new way of living.
