Commander Zavala is an Awoken Guardian who serves as the Vanguard of the Titan class, and overall Vanguard Commander of The Last City. Stern and uncompromising, Zavala's only goal is to safeguard humanity within the Last City against all threats. He oversees all Guardian military operations, and led the Guardians to victory in both the Taken War and Red War. In the aftermath of both conflicts, Zavala has become increasingly isolated and reluctant to commit Guardians to conflicts outside of the Last City.

Zavala was revived by his stalwart Ghost, Targe, as a Guardian in the bowels of a shattered spaceship wreck along a shoreline. With absolutely no memory of his past, a trait typical of Guardians, he began a journey to the Traveler due to its very light re-conceiving him. He encountered many Fallen on his journey and, during a battle against an Eliksni Vandal, he was swiftly cut down and revived by Targe for the first time. He claimed a Fallen spear as a weapon after his victory, quickly fleeing when he spotted a Skiff landing nearby. After slaying another group of Fallen, one Vandal shot him in the back as it was dying, killing Zavala again. Once Targe revived him once more, he found an auto rifle on one of the Fallen and took it with him. Upon reaching the Traveler, Zavala discovered a humble encampment of refugees below it with other Guardians acting as its defenders, including another Titan named Shaxx. Zavala also met a spiritual leader called The Speaker as he preached around a campfire, claiming to speak the word of the Traveler.

Remaining in the encampment, Zavala aided refugees as they arrived. The camp soon grew into a village, eventually becoming The Last City of Earth. When the City was assaulted by angered Eliksni, Zavala fought alongside Warlord Shaxx and his fellow Guardians to protect the citizens and the Traveler. When he spotted the future Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 and a group of civilians being chased by a pack of Vandals and Dregs, Zavala used his Fist of Havoc to destroy the raiders. Following the battle, he helped construct walls around the Last City with the aid of other Guardians, including Shaxx, Ikora Rey, and Sloane.

A life with Safiyah
A life with Safiyah
Expand-section
Sometime during his training, a wandering surgeon known as Safiyah would approach Saladin's gates, offering her skills in exchange for shelter to which Saladin agrees. When the House of Devils launched attacks against Human settlements, Zavala and his companions would bring the survivors to Safiyah's hospital. Shortly after closing the gates, Zavala would speak with his associates, declaring that they should use this opportunity to launch a counterattack. However he was interrupted by Safiyah who stated that they required supplies rather then violence. When his companions leave, Zavala asks Safiyah to repeat what she had said. Without flinching Safiyah would make it clear that she meant what she said. When Targe appeared behind his shoulder, Zavala would introduce Safiyah to his Ghost, with Targe making it apparent that he was not taking part in this altercation. Zavala would continue their discussion by telling her that launching attacks against the Fallen would guarantee her safety, with Safiyah once again remarking that they depended on supplies for survival.

Targe would tell Zavala that she was correct causing him to glare his Ghost down and ask him if he was truly apart of this discussion. Growing frustrated, Safiyah would tell Zavala he didn't understand before walking away. Following her into the tent flap, Safiyah would order him to wash his hands before handing him cleaning rags. After inspecting a flesh wound and removing the dirty bandage, Safiyah would guide Zavala to put the rags into the wound. She asked him if he knew how difficult it was to survive. Zavala would respond that he did, however Safiyah questioned if he how arduous it was without his Ghost, causing him to not respond. She reminds him that mortals like her had to struggle with other threats such as sickness, starvation, and cold. When another patient enters the hospital, Safiyah tells him that the wounded look to her for help and not him.

During the early spring, Zavala would lead training exercises with civilians in the courtyard. When one of the civilians accidentally wounds himself, Zavala would critique them for their fragility. He would then be interrupted by Safiyah who demand to know what he was doing. Catching him by surprise and leaving him oblivious, Zavala is then struck in his forearm by his training partner. When Targe attempted to heal him, Safiyah would order him to stop and order Zavala to follow her. Upon entering the hospital tent, Safiyah closes Zavala's wound so he can understand the natural healing process. Curiously he asks her were she learned her skills as a surgeon.  Safiyah reveals to him that she learned her talents from her mother and books from the Golden Age.  Zavala then tells Safiyah he would like to see the books to which she obliged. Later that night he would speak with Saladin in the empty courtyard of Safiyah's remarkable talents. Saladin reveals to Zavala that he is aware of the feelings they have for each other. Although Zavala tried to request that their relationship was just one of mutual respect, Saladin would not fall victim to Zavala's falsehood. After staring at each other for a long moment, Saladin reminds him that Safiyah is mortal and states that whatever life he will make with her will decay.

Later when Safiyah was teaching him how to yarn, they would glimpse smoke plume on the horizon coming form the distance. When Safiyah makes for the gates, Zavala would grap her by the arm and attempts to persuade her not to join the battle due to the immense danger. However Safiyah pulls away from his grip and leaves before he could argue. Arriving to the position where the smoke was emitting form the air, Zavala and Safiyah work together to kill a group of Fallen attacking a caravan. Shortly after the skirmish, Safiyah uncovers an orphaned infant in the wreckage. When Safiyah began to weap for the lives she could not save, Zavala would put his palm on his shoulder as they both agreed they would keep him safe. Returning to the mountain with the child, Safiyah would name him Hakim after thinking fondly about her father. As months pass until summer arrives, Zavala visits Safiyah and Hakim between his duties. Eventually one faithful as they both listen to the cicadas sing Safiyah reveals to Zavala that she would be taking Hakim to her sister's village. Zavala would respond by stating that they would both take him to the village together. Next morning Zavala would speak with Saladin and abandon his duties, leaving behind his pendant with the Iron Lords' sigil. He would then meet up with Safiyah as they would travel together with Hakim to her sister's village.

Upon arriving at the village, Safiyah would be greeted by her sister Anami, who raises an eyebrow after spotting Zavala and Hakim. Overtime as days pass by Zavala tells Safiyah that he thinks that Anami dislikes him with Targe remarking with certainty that she also diss approves of him. When Safiyah asks why they believe this, Zavala and Targe reveal to her that Anami made it apparent that she disliked them both. Safiyah would simply frown and remark that her sister did like their son. Within the village him and Safiyah build their home where they raise Hakim as their own. Zavala would bond with his son by sparring with wooden swords behind their house in the field. When Hakim was fifteen, Zavala would give Hakim a knife to use for their sparring lessons to prepare him to take a life. Shortly after Hakim raises the knife to his throat, Safiyah runs outside and demands to know what they are doing. Backing away from the blade, Zavala would reply that he was teaching Hakim to defend himself. As Safiyah embraces their son, Hakim would push her away and tell her he was capable of doing this lesson. When Safiyah shakes her head in disbelief, Zavala states that it is essential that he is prepared to take a life. Safiyah tells Zavala that he is just a child, with Zavala replying that would not matter to the Fallen. Sometime after the lesson as Zavala watches over Hakim as he sleeps, Safiyah would return home after speaking with Anami. When Zavala takes Safiyah into his arms she whispers to him to let Hakim be a child for a little longer as he would miss those times when they have passed.

Two years later their village would be bombared by the House of Devils forcing Zavala to leave their house to defend their home. Unknowingly to Zavala, Hakim had sneaked outside of their house to join the battle, were he eventually came into a confrontations with the Captain, Kethiks, the Yet-Proven. Despite the training he had received from his father, Hakim would prove no much for the infamous Captain and would be impaled into the ground. Unconditionally consumed by rage, Zavala charges with at the Captain, knocking it down with two shots and finishing it with another. Safiyah runs to Hakim pressing her hand on his wound as their  son perished within her arms. Overwhelmed by grief Zavala merely whispers to Safiyah as he kneels beside her before they bring Hakim's body home.

Zavala was utterly devastated by Hakim's death, spending most nights paying respect to his son at his grave. However one night within his bedroom, Zavala would beg Targe to bring Hakim back, with his Ghost reminding him that it was impossible. He then begs Targe to take his Light and use it to resurrect his son, however Targe once again reminds him that he was not capable of doing that. Zavala would ask Targe if he would resurrect Hakim if it was possible. Blinded by his grief, Zavala reaches for his gun and pleads for Targe to find a way to bring him back. As Zavala begins to raise his gun at his Ghost, Safiyah barges into their bedroom, causing him to lower his gun and fall to his knees. She reminds Zavala that they cannot change what has happened and tells him that she can no longer stay within this village. Looking away from Zavala, Safiyah tells him that she cannot understand eternity and even tho she is uncertain he can either, he is still immortal while she is not. Understanding that they were parting ways, he takes a hard breath and promises to Safiyah that he will never forget them.

When him and Safiyah depart the village, Anami would simply only give Zavala a sad smile and a nod. Traversing to the Iron Lord's encampment, they pass the place where they first found Hakim all those years ago. Upon arriving at the gates, Safiyah gives him her knitting needles and tells him that he will survive this. When Safiyah departs to find the people who need her, Zavala enters the encampment, returning to his duties under Lord Saladin. His mentor would say little to him, passing no judgement, nor tender any admonition, instead he would only say "Love is a moment in time. We are not." Zavala would wonder if Saladin was speaking from experience, however he would not raise his suspicion to his teacher. Decades later in the Last City he would receive a message from Anami warning him to come quickly before it was too late. Although Zavala would arrive at the destination only to discover he was too late as Safiyah had now passed away. He spots Anami among the other mourners at Safiyah's grave and nods at her, she smiles a sad smile and nods back in a silent thanks. Zavala would wait until most of the mourners had left before he approached her headstone and places a flower onto her grave. After Zavala rises he would spot a women standing behind him, quickly coming to the conclusion that it was her daughter. She would ask him how he had known her to which Zavala would simply tell her that he was an old friend. He would wonder if she knows who he is, his history, and her brother, however she simply nods and thanks him. Zavala would continuously visit the graves of Safiyah's descendants over many decades. Eventually they would arrive at the Last City 10 generations later, with the Hidden telling him when they are born, when they are sick, and when they die. Although he would never speak to them when they are alive, he always leaves a token and asks for forgiveness.

While the City was preparing for an assault by the combined forces of all the Fallen houses, tensions between the Speaker and Vanguard Commander Osiris reached a breaking point. Zavala, having recently become the Titan Vanguard by replacing Saint-14, attended a meeting of the Consensus without Osiris present. When the New Monarchy representative protested that Osiris was absent, Zavala announced that Ikora would be filling in for Osiris. The Speaker asked her to formally become the new Warlock Vanguard, which she accepted. The Speaker then proclaimed that he was exiling Osiris from the Last City and thus named Zavala as the new Vanguard Commander in place of the troublesome Warlock.

When Zavala learned that the Hunter Anastasia Bray was investigating her past life, which Guardians were discouraged from doing, he confronted her in the Tower's plaza. He told her that in addition to the inappropriateness of keeping her previous life's name, he believed her research was causing her to neglect her duties to the Last City. Ana argued that her past was useful to the Last City and may be why the Traveler brought her back, but Zavala countered that she was brought back to be a Guardian and fight for the future. Upon arriving on Titan, the resistance secured a landing zone, but soon discovered that the New Pacific Arcology was infested with Savathûn's Hive, leading to many deaths among the Light-less Guardians. Zavala shot down her suggestion of storming the Arcology and stared up at the Hive Dreadnaught in Saturn's rings, lamenting on his choice to come to a moon that lay in the shadow of the City's greatest enemy and that the treasures of the Golden Age mattered little in the face of Hive demons. Sloane tried once more to convince him to assault the Hive, but he cut her off and order all Vanguard forces to fall back across the bridge to their landing zone and to post guards on their side of the bridge only before dismissing her.

When the Young Wolf arrived on Titan to aid the resistance, Zavala warned them away, declaring that too many Lightless Guardians had already fallen to the Hive. However, their Ghost informed him that they had regained the Light, stunning Zavala. Sloane redirected the Young Wolf to the command center at Siren's Watch, and Zavala asked them to be careful in their assault. As they began their mission, Zavala explained to them why he had come to Titan, although he now bitterly regretted his decision. While the Young Wolf made progress, Zavala disagreed with Sloane's assessment that once they secured the control center they could plan a counter-offensive and be at the City's gates soon, noting it would not be so easy. After a Hive ritual was disrupted, the Young Wolf's Ghost suggested they should consult Eris Morn on which god they had been attempting to commune with, but Zavala revealed that no one had seen Eris, or Cayde and Ikora, since the Last City fell. After the breeding ground at the control room was cleared out, Zavala and Sloane flew to meet the Young Wolf there. As Sloane began setting up the command center, Zavala spoke with the Young Wolf on the landing platform, and expressed hope that if the Light had managed to find its way back to them, then perhaps it could be restored to the other Guardians as well. However, he was worried about what would happen before then, as many more Lightless Guardians would fall in the meantime, and wondered what they were without the Light. Shaking off his despair, Zavala directed the Young Wolf to restore power to the platforms by reactivating the New Pacific Arcology's wave energy convertors, which had been damaged by the Hive's occupation.

In the months after the Last City's liberation, Zavala began going through the Speaker's restricted files and learned many secrets that had been kept hidden from the Vanguard and Consensus. Among those files was the true location of Rasputin at the Futurescape in the Hellas Basin on Mars, not within the Cosmodrome. The Speaker and Lord Saladin had deliberately misled Zavala and the others in order to keep Rasputin hidden and most of his power frozen beneath the ice caps of Mars, as they did not trust the Warmind. Now armed with the knowledge of Rasputin's role in the destruction of the Iron Lords, Zavala agreed with their fears and no longer viewed Rasputin as a potential ally, but rather a potential enemy that had become mentally broken following the Collapse. He was therefore alarmed when Ikora informed him that the Traveler's awakening had caused the ice caps to melt and begin revealing the BrayTech Futurescape and Rasputin's hub. Pouring over the files, Zavala discovered a secret entrance into the Warmind's vault and resolved to eliminate Rasputin personally and without informing Ikora or Cayde, as he believed Ikora would wish to use the Warmind's knowledge and ignore the dangers while Cayde was too busy filling the Prison of Elders.

Upon the return of Cayde's body to the Tower, Zavala mourned the loss of his comrade and friend with Ikora and the Young Wolf. The Warlock Vanguard, enraged at Cayde's murder, declared that the every Guardian would arm themselves and storm the Reef to kill Uldren. However, Zavala refuses, citing the recent conflicts that have already reduced their strength and that they must focus on the awakened Traveler and the Last City instead of pursuing vengeance. Thus, Zavala was willing to let Uldren and his Scorn have the Reef. Ikora accused him of being a coward, a accusation Zavala accepted if it meant he did not have to bury anymore friends. However, the Young Wolf interjected and declared that he would not have to, as they would deal with Uldren themselves.

Zavala spoke to the the Young Wolf before they departed the Tower, which surprised the Commander, as he had assumed they would have already left on their unsanctioned mission. He admitted that he knew better than trying to convince them not to go, as that would only insult them both, but he reminded them that the escapees from the Prison of Elders were running rampart across the system and the Vanguard was stretched too thin to stop them all. As such, the Young Wolf would have no support from the Vanguard if they did choose to wage a war in the Reef seeking vengeance.

In the Tangled Shore, the Young Wolf forged an uneasy alliance with the Fallen mob boss, The Spider, to aid them in hunting down Uldren and his Scorn Barons. Later on, as the Guardians worked on powering up the Io Seraph Bunker and connecting it to Rasputin's mainframe, Zavala sought out the Warmind to make sure he understood the stakes and was on the City's side. Rasputin answered by showing him a galaxy map displaying how close the Pyramid Fleet was to the Solar System. Zavala understood this and questions Rasputin if this is what had his attention, whether to fight, rebuild or run. Zavala soon found his Ghost hijacked by Rasputin, who relayed various messages from the Collapse, from those who did not survive. Zavala finally came to understand that while the Warmind had given everything for a cause that was swept away, he had nonetheless survived through the Collapse and was now afraid to fail humanity again. The Titan Vanguard finally came to an understanding with Rasputin, resolving that once The Almighty had been broken, the City would devote whatever resources the Warmind needed and when the time came, they would stand together as allies, equals, and Guardians.

Upon the re-arrival of the Leviathan within the system of Sol, Zavala took it upon himself to take part in the investigation into its activity. Stationed within the orbit of Luna, the former Cabal Emperor Calus sought to create a connection between the Leviathan and the Pyramid on Earth's moon. This caused Nightmares to emerge en masse within the derelict halls of the Leviathan, tormenting those who get too close. Seeking to interrupt this and prevent an enemy gaining unknown power, Zavala authorized the mission, Operation Midas, and took part in a ritual conducted by Eris Morn, binding his own personal Nightmare to be used in an attempt to cut Calus' connection with the Lunar Pyramid. This took the form of Zavala's wife, Safiyah, from long ago when Zavala was still a protégé of Saladin Forge.

As stoic as ever, Zavala sought not to speak directly about the subject of his Nightmare, though was willing for those who do know to relay information about it to other Vanguard members. Eris Morn reveals to the Guardian the tale of Zavala, his wife and their adopted son, Hakim, who he lost in battle centuries ago. To sever the connection to the Pyramid, Eris asks Zavala to confront the Nightmare, but the guilt of his past perceived failings prevents Zavala from completing the ritual of severance, even as the Guardian managed to slay the Nightmare of Kethiks, Grief Unforgiven, the embodiment of Zavala's guilt and the apparition of the Fallen who killed Hakim. After spending a week in thought over the situation, Zavala comes to accept that he must let go of those past failings, for he had tried his best and nothing could be done to change the outcome of the past. Upon doing so, he manages to convert the Nightmare of Safiyah into the Memory of Safiyah, finally granting Zavala a measure of peace and forgiveness. This helps inch the Vanguard and Cabal coalition towards its goal of stopping Calus' current activity, but it comes at a cost. Zavala admits that the Traveler isn't his "god", and the words of his Nightmare appear to have darkened his belief in the Traveler as a benevolent entity. However, Zavala admits the old adage, that Guardians "make their own fate", Traveler or not.
After helping the Guardian helped Luzaku clear Taken from The Blooming Deep, Zavala made contact, surprised to find out a Hive Lightbearer turned against Savathûn. Luzaku corrected him, stating that while she is a friend of the Coalition, she is still loyal to the Lucent Brood as if it were her family. However, Luzaku stated that she wished to try to change the hearts of the Lucent Hive for the better, Zavala remarking that her goal was a wise one.

Resolute, experienced, strong and charismatic, Zavala is a perfect exemplar of the Titan class of Guardian and a gifted leader that leads the Vanguard with the utmost determination. Zavala's first priority is the protection of the Last City and takes that charge seriously. No matter what force that seeks the destruction of the Last City, Zavala would face that enemy head-on. His one true goal is to defeat the Last City's enemies and reclaim the Solar System. Zavala has complete faith in the Guardians purpose in defending those in need. For this reason, he doesn't approve of those who doubt the Guardians abilities while espousing the dangers of the Last City's enemies, such as Eris Morn. Despite this, Zavala finds the value and skills in everyone and will defer to their advice when needed.
