Due to a Harpy's lack of a melee attack, it is possible to get close to one to the point it cannot fire, and must perform evasive maneuvers and dodge rolls to regain the required distance to fire its ranged weaponry. It is however not recommended to do so in high level activities as a single Harpy can kill you in time before you reach their no fire zone or when multiple combatants are nearby to aid the defenseless Harpy.

"It swam back and forth through the air, spinning, the single red eye looking - I realized - for me."
Grimoire description

The Harpy is an airborne Vex unit capable of high speed and agility.[1]

Overview

Harpies fly rapidly in and out of combat. They must stop and stabilize before attacking, opening up their shells and revealing a writhing mass of filaments.[2][3] They are equipped with Harpy Slap Rifles which, as its name suggests, is a weapon exclusively for the Harpy.[4] In Destiny 2, Harpies can also be found using the Vex Laser Rifle. When at rest, Harpies can be seen stretching their bodies towards the sky, while their tentacles graze the ground.

Gameplay

Harpies in Destiny use Slap Rifles, while in Destiny 2 they can employ the Vex Laser Rifle as an alternative weapon.
