War moons are natural satellites converted into warships by the Hive, taken from around the orbit of Fundament after the war with the Ammonite species. War moons are hollowed-out shells of moons or planetoids, repurposed to serve as breeding grounds, training facilities, and possibly even shipyards and carriers for the Hive fleets. They were described as black, whether to cloak their thermal emission to prevent detection or through constant war.

Not long after Emperor Calus's exile, the Leviathan observed a fleet of Cabal warships battling a war moon on the border of the empire. As the moon was too large to be destroyed by direct bombardment, warships cloaked by Psion powers attempted to land drills and troops on its surface to deliver a planet-cracker into its depths.
At some point during Emperor Calus' exile, he and his Loyalists have found a stray war moon that housed the Crown of Sorrow. In an attempt to bring the Hive into the Loyalists, Calus had gifted the Crown to Gahlran, the Sorrow-Bearer, who was then taken and swayed by the Hive power in the Crown, turning him against Calus. Subsequently, Calus had called for Guardians to re-enter the Leviathan to kill Gahlran.

Much later, Calus and his Loyalists encountered another war moon. Within they found the Crown of Sorrow. In an attempt to bring the Hive under his control, Calus created Gahlran, the Sorrow-Bearer for the sole purpose of wielding the Crown of Sorrow. Upon donning the Crown of Sorrow, Gahlran was corrupted by the Hive magic placed within the Crown by Savathûn, turning him against Calus. Subsequently, Calus called upon the Guardians to re-enter The Leviathan to kill Gahlran.

Following the death of Dominus Ghaul, many war moons took part in the Fall of Torobatl as part of Xivu Arath's army invading the Cabal's capital. The moons proved to be too powerful for the Cabal's military and quickly overwhelmed Torobatl's defenses, forcing Caiatl to evacuate the planet's population and order a tactical retreat to the Sol System.

*Oryx's Dreadnaught could be thought of as a war moon, as it served as a mobile base for his Hive.

*War moons appeared to have fallen out of favor, at least amongst Oryx's brood, since none were spotted during the Battle of Saturn or anywhere. It may be that Hive warships are either modified moons or built entirely separate, or Oryx left his moons behind when he came to avenge Crota.

*Given how the Hive have nearly hallowed out Earth's moon, its possible the Hive were planning on turning Luna into one of their War Moons.
