The death of the Witness causes an aurora to begin leaking from the portal to the Pale Heart, venting both Light and Dark into the void of space. The Coalition establishes a no-fly zone around it. At the time of the aurora's formation, several pieces of anomalous material called Echoes all jettison themselves out of the portal, with one being reported by Crow as having travelled to the area between Jupiter and Neptune before stopping in Nessus's orbit. These "Echoes" of the Witness are a result of memories splitting from its collective consciousness, with these objects holding immense power. In addition, it was revealed before the allied attack on The Witness's Monolith that Xivu Arath had defected from The Witness and was now in hiding along with her brood. Eramis's whereabouts are still unknown as House Salvation begun to turn on itself, Savathûn and the Lucent Hive are contesting for control over the Pale Heart, Scorn and Taken forces are lashing out violently with no leader to command them, and Fikrul is still alive. Crow tells Zavala that he'll begin to go track Fikrul's trail himself. Shortly after The Witness's defeat, the Guardian, Osiris and Saint-14 are dispatched to Nessus by Ikora Rey in order to investigate the crash site of the Echo that landed there, as well as assist Failsafe against the strange new Vex forces led by the Conductor, who acquired the Echo. Another Echo was acquired by Fikrul, and he was able to use its power to convert living Eliksni into Revenant Scorn. A third Echo eventually landed on the Dreadnaught.

Additionally, the Guardians would uncover a secret source of power deep within the Pale Heart after using their mastery of Light and Darkness in the form of the class items that would enhance their Prismatic abilities: Solipsism, Relativism, and Stoicism.
