Thorn is an Exotic Kinetic Hand Cannon and one of the Weapons of Sorrow. It was first able to be acquired via the Exotic bounty, "A Light in the Dark". Thorn returned to Destiny 2 during Season of the Drifter and was acquired through a hidden Quest, “Independent Study”. As of Beyond Light it is only acquirable through the Monument To Lost Lights.
It is theorized that the Thorn is a revolver, as indicated by its apparent use of a cylindrical magazine. The Thorn is most likely a  hand-cannon, as it shares some similarities with the Duke MK.44.

Description
Trivia
The weapon is sleek and dark black in coloration, with many spikes or "thorns" adorning the sides angled toward the front of the weapon. The projectiles shot from it also resemble giant daggers or "thorns".

History
Also see: Dredgen Yor

Thorn was once a hand cannon called Rose, which belonged to the Guardian Rezyl Azzir. Once a noble hero, Rezyl became corrupted by Hive magic after facing the Hive Wizard Xyor, the Blessed and her Knight betrothed at the Hellmouth.

After spending days locked in battle with the Hive, the Titan took down the Knight using Rose and successfully escaped the Hellmouth. He would then graft the fragments of chitinous bone he collected from the slain hive onto his Hand Cannon as a trophy, not knowing that Xyor's whispers would echo from them, corrupting Rezyl's mind and Rose itself, which became reborn as a Weapon of Sorrow known as Thorn.

Rezyl eventually gave into the bones' whispers, adopting the new moniker Dredgen Yor after looking to the Hive to try finding more ways to defeat the Darkness. His Hand Cannon also became ravenous for the Light, causing Yor to begin wantonly murdering countless Guardians and their Ghosts to satiate his weapon's hunger.
The Thorn has been labeled as the "yin" of the Destiny universe (as opposed to the Last Word, which is the "yang").

Sometime later, an unnamed Guardian would acquire a Weapon bounty from Xander 99-40, revealing that a then-unknown Weapon of Sorrow was discovered recently at the Summonings Pits of the Hellmouth. Recovering a depleted Thorn during one of the many rituals involving Phogoth, the Guardian fed it power with kills from the Hive and in the Crucible. Doing so recklessly, however, whispers of Darkness from the corrupted hand cannon plagued its bearer for more death. Seeking out the Speaker for guidance, they managed to stave off its blight from spreading with an infusion of Light yet the corruption lingered. To sever it, the Guardian killed Xyor in another Strike at the Summoning Pits and freed their Thorn of its bond to the Hive permanently.

Sometime after the defeat of Dredgen Yor by Shin Malphur, "cleansed" replicas of Thorn were created in secret by the Shadows of Yor, a group of Guardians who idolized the fallen Guardian. Their activity raised enough concern for Shin Malphur, Yor's killer, to take up arms against the Shadows. A year after the Red War, a Shadow of Yor known as Callum Sol was found and killed by Shin as an example made to warn the other Dredgens. The Young Wolf would find the spot of the Shadow's final death, retrieving weapon parts from his remains for The Drifter to craft Malfeasance, a Hand Cannon based on Thorn's design.

It was later revealed that Shin Malphur's killing of Callum Sol was in fact a trap intended to bait Guardians that could not resist their temptations of the Darkness, and that Shin was actually a member of the Shadows of Yor himself. Having taken upon himself to prevent a whole generation of Guardians from following in Yor's footsteps, Shin (under the false identity "Zyre Orsa") founded the Shadows along with Teben Grey, Zana Maas, Jonah Pavic, Braga Yasuul and Callum Sol as a means to uncover Lightbearers who were at risk of going rogue after participating in the Drifter's Gambit and dissuade them from falling into temptation. Shin also looked for a Guardian capable of resisting their temptations, leading them to find the Young Wolf, whom in the years after claiming their Thorn from the Hellmouth and cleansing it had went on to do extraordinary feats. They had killed Enkaar, the Anointed, an infamous Hive weapons master who crafted the original blueprints of the Weapons of Sorrow, and managed to reforge another broken copy of Thorn, replacing the one they had lost in the Red War without succumbing to its corrupting influence.

During Season of Opulence, Shin entrusted the Guardian with Yor's original Thorn. In their hands, Thorn was first be cleansed to reveal the original Rose underneath, and then extensively modified and charged with Light to become the Hand Cannon Lumina.

At some unknown point, a Warlock named Jana-14 who was obsessed with researching Thorn and other topics surrounding Dredgen Yor managed to reverse-engineer the hand cannon's effects, in the process accidentally causing her fellow researcher Carro to suffer a slow and agonizing death. Jana-14 had her fellow researchers secretly conduct an autopsy of Carro's body without the Vanguard's approval, and found that tissue samples from his body yielded an explosive, contagious version of the Weapon of Sorrow's corrupting effect, which she infused into a pair of Warlock gauntlets to create the Necrotic Grip. Sometime during the war against the House of Salvation, the Guardian would obtain the Grips and discover its ability to synergize with Thorn itself, enabling the gun's rounds to take on the traits of the Grips' poison.

Gameplay
Thorn, like every exotic in Destiny, has a "signature perk". Thorn's is called "Mark of the Devourer", which allows rounds fired from the weapon to pierce the target and cause lingering damage over time, which, in PvP, could potentially prevent a fleeing Guardian's shield from regenerating quickly enough for a kill-shot to be delivered. This perk has since been nerfed from its Year 1 iteration.

Perks
*Intrinsic: Mark of the Devourer – Rounds pierce targets and cause lingering damage over time.
*Barrel
**Accurized Ballistics: More range and impact. Increased recoil.
**Field Choke: More range and impact. Increased recoil.
**Aggressive Ballistics: More predictable recoil. Enhanced impact. Shorter range and more recoil.
*1st Perk
**Final Round: The last round in a magazine deals bonus damage.
*Stat modifiers
**Snapshot: Aiming this weapon is incredibly fast.
**Send It: Increases range and accuracy. Harder to handle. Decreases carried Ammo capacity.
**Perfect Balance: This weapon has extremely low recoil.

----
Augmented through dark practices, Thorn was once a hero's weapon. Its jagged frame hints at a sinister truth: a powerful connection to the unutterable sorceries of the Hive.

The legend of Thorn is bound to the rise and fall of Dredgen Yor, a Guardian whose name is remembered with disgust and shame. The weapon was thought destroyed... but rumors of its existence still haunt the wilds.

**Slightly increases range and stability.
**Slightly increases handling speed.
*Accurized Rounds: This weapon can fire longer distances.

*Exotic Trait: Soul Devourer - Absorbing a Remnant strengthens Mark of the Devourer and partially refills the magazine.
*Textured Grip: The friction on this weapon's grip is particularly strong.
**Greatly increases handling speed.
**Slightly decreases stability.

Catalyst
The Exotic Catalyst for Thorn was first released during Season of the Wish and can be obtained as a random drop through ritual activity completions (Strikes, Crucible and Gambit) once the weapon has been acquired. Once obtained, it requires 700 kills with the weapon to complete.

The catalyst, once completed, will grant the following additional perks:

*+15 Range
*+5 Stability
*+5 Airborne Effectiveness
*Exotic Trait: Refined Soul - Grants bonus range and stability. Dealing a final blow or absorbing a Remnant grants additional increased weapon range, as well as increased mobility and handling for a short time.

"TO RENDER ONE'S ENEMIES IS TO SEE THEM NOT AS EQUALS, BUT OBJECTS—HOLLOW OF SPIRIT AND MEANING." —13TH UNDERSTANDING, 7TH BOOK OF SORROW
----
"The Weapons of Sorrow are not the endgame, but a road map. Each evolution, every advance in the delivery of pain and the mastery of destruction feeds the Hive's hateful weapons research. They will map every scream, harness every aggression, until they understand every method by which to ravage the hearts, minds, and flesh of man. And in doing so, they will turn us against ourselves—feeding our lust, our greed, our fear, until we become a threat unto ourselves like none we could imagine. So, wield these, angry reaper. Strive to know the darkness in your own heart. Walk in the shadows of fallen heroes. And know that you are an enemy of hope."
