The Tomb of Elders is similar in structure to [[Riven's Lair]] while Contest of Elders is similar to [[The Coil]] with the difference being the Warden’s Judgment mechanic. This mechanic influences the frequency in which higher-health combatants will spawn in any encounter and the amount of loot players will obtain after completing a loop. Completing bonus objectives in any encounter will increase stacks of the '''Warden's Favor''' buff and decrease stacks of the '''Warden Punishment''' debuff, but also increases the frequency of those higher-health combatants in the next encounter and activates traps within the arena. Conversely, failing bonus objectives in any encounter will increase stacks of the '''Warden's Punishment''' debuff and decrease stacks of the '''Warden Favor''' buff but also decreases the frequency of those higher-health combatants in the next encounter. Both '''Warden's Favor''' and '''Warden's Punishment''' can stack up to 3 times. The fireteam that holds any stacks of '''Warden's Favor''' will be able to skip the initial cryopod encounter after completing a loop and allow them to open a treasure chamber at the end of the Contest of Elders activity. The fireteam that holds any stacks of '''Warden's Punishment''' or the '''Warden’s Judgment''' buff will be forced to complete the initial cryopod encounter after completing a loop. At the start of an encounter, a random modifier will be applied to all players and within the Contest of Elders, revive tokens will appear, where players must kill a [[Model Prisoner]] to earn more.

This variant must be played with a full fireteam. After loading into the activity, all players will receive a '''Warden's Gaze''' debuff, which will cause a wipe if the fireteam fails to complete the bonus objective within the time limit. After completing the first 2 encounters, players will enter a boss fight with Skolas. During this encounter, one player in the fireteam will receive a '''Devouring Essence''' debuff that last for 30 seconds and kills them if the timer expires unless it is passed to another player. After that debuff is acquired by another player, the player who last had it will receive another debuff called '''Drained of Essence''' that lasts for 25 seconds. The player with that debuff won’t be able to pick up the '''Devouring Essence''' debuff from another player carrying it until the timer expires. A Revenant Baron will spawn and when it’s defeated and its Revenant Totem is destroyed, a mote will drop near where the Revenant Totem was destroyed. The player who is carrying the '''Devouring Essence''' will only be able to pick up the mote and when they do, it will become the '''Enhanced Essence''' debuff. The player carrying that debuff must deposit it into the Servitor emitting a red vapor cloud. After doing this 3 times, players will be able to DPS Skolas. During the DPS phase, a bunch of Dark Ether with a magenta color will appear, travel towards Skolas, and heal him if it’s not shot beforehand. After the DPS phase ends, High Revenants will spawn and leave behind the same Dark Ether seen during DPS when they are defeated. After Skolas is defeated, players will able to enter the treasure chamber and acquire the [[Renunciation]] ship when completed for the first time.
