Originally, in order to access PsiOps Battlegrounds, players had to complete the first mission of The Witch Queen campaign, then interact with a flag in the Tower's Hangar. With the release of Lightfall, PsiOps Battlegrounds were added to the Vanguard Ops playlist.

There are three versions of PsiOps Battlegrounds, taking place in three different locations in Sol and fighting with one of the different Lightbearer variants. When the players reach the final boss, they will fight it until a third of its health is depleted. At that point, two Imperial Optus Psions will appear which will trap the Lightbearer, then open its inner world as a Mindscape and send the Guardians into it. Within, the players will fight the Lightbearing Hive at peak power, and it will summon massive amounts of reinforcements. After losing a third of its health, the Hive will disappear and summon an Aspect of Savathûn, or two for the second third. These Aspects are invulnerable to all damage, except for the Synaptic Spear, which will appear in the arena. Once the Aspects are slain, the boss will reappear, and be vulnerable. Crushing the Lightbearer's Ghost will deprive it of the Light, and finish the battle.
