The PlayStation 5 is a ninth generation video game console, launched on November 12, 2020. It is the successor to the 4. The PlayStation 5's main hardware features include a solid-state drive customized for high-speed data streaming to enable significant improvements in storage performance, an AMD GPU capable of 4K resolution display at up to 120 frames per second, hardware-accelerated ray tracing for realistic lighting and reflections, the Tempest Engine for hardware-accelerated 3D audio effects, backward compatibility with the majority of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games, and the PlayStation VR2 headset. Succeeding the DualShock controller that had been the mainstay controller of the previous four PlayStation consoles, the new DualSense controller offers vibrotactile haptic provided by voice coil actuators integrated in the palm grips, and the analog triggers (herein known as "adaptive triggers") now have a force feedback mechanism, provided by two DC rotary motors. The actuators in the hand grip allowed for varied and intuitive feedback about in-game actions. The motors in the adaptive triggers allows the controller to provide varying levels of resistance to the user depending on in-game actions. The PlayStation 5 launched with 2 different variations: the Base model and the Digital Edition. The Base model includes an optical disc drive compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray discs while the Digital Edition lacks this drive, as a lower-cost model for buying games only through download. The two variants were launched simultaneously and were sold for $499.99 and $399.99 respectively. Slimmer hardware revisions of both models replaced the original models on sale in November 2023.
In May 2020, Bungie affirmed its plans to release  Destiny 2  for the next-generation consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and that the game on these platforms would support native 4K resolution at 60fps. Destiny 2 was released on December 8, 2020 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Destiny 2 players on the previous-generation consoles, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, can update their versions to the PlayStation 5 version within the same family for free and bring existing content across, with Bungie using Microsoft's "Smart Delivery" program for the Xbox Series X/S update. Field of view customization was also added. The first Destiny can also be played on the PlayStation 5 via PlayStation 4 backward compatibility.
