The Cabal established a beachhead on Phobos for initiating the invasion of Mars. During the invasion the Cabal encountered the native Vex programing the Virgo Prohibition, and began a massive war of attrition following their nearly uncontested conquest of Mars. The Vex fought to protect the entrance to their "birthplace", the Black Garden, from the ever expanding Cabal Exclusion Zone. This war was fought with little outside interference, the City busy with her own problems.
Eventually, tentative Guardian reports of a Cabal commander, Bracus Tho’ourg, who secured the Buried City on Mars with merely a fraction of the planet’s current Cabal force, reached the ears of the Vanguard. The first Guardians who faced him died at some point between here and the City Age.
